About CERN
In December 1951, there was an intergovernmental meeting of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) in Paris. There they have proposed the first resolution on establishing a European Council for Nuclear Research. Two months later, an agreement was signed to establish the Provisional Council – the acronym CERN was born.
Today, our understanding of matter goes well beyond the nucleus, and CERN’s main area of research is particle physics.

1. Doctoral Student Program
If your field is at the interface of technology: applied physics, computer science, mathematics, electricity, electronics, mechanical or civil engineering, accelerator instrumentation, particle physics experiments, materials science, radiation protection, safety. and environmental protection, science communication, surveying, ultra-high vacuum. Application Requirements
- You are a national of a Member State or an associate member of CERN.
- You have started or are going to start a Ph.D. program at a university.
- Your planned work at CERN is all or part of the graduation work required to complete your Ph.D. The awarding of the diploma remains the responsibility of your university. Academic arrangements are discussed between the university thesis supervisor and the CERN director.
- You must have good knowledge of English or French.

2. Technical Student Program
Suppose you are a graduate student in applied physics, engineering, or computer science, and you are looking for an internship period or a place to carry out your graduation project. In that case, this is the best option for you. You can receive a supplement of 3319 Swiss francs per month with an association contract of 4 to 12 months. The documents and qualifications required for the entire engineering student program are the same.

- You are a national of a Member State or an associate member of CERN.
- You will have completed at least 18 months of your bachelor’s degree (bachelor’s or master’s) by the next round of student selection in October 2022.
- Remain registered as a full-time student during the internship.
- You must have good knowledge of English or French.

4. Marie-Curie Ph.D Positions

7. Short Term Internship 2022
If you are a university student in the technical or administrative field and looking to spend a few months learning “on the job”, this could be an excellent opportunity for you.
Qualification Requirements
- You are a full-time student (post-secondary) and at least 18 years old.
- Your major is in one of the following fields: applied physics, computer science, mathematics, electricity, electronics, mechanical or civil engineering, instrumentation, materials science, radiation protection, safety and environmental protection, topography, ultra-high vacuum, scientific communications. A minimal number of positions may be available in administrative areas such as Translation, Advanced Secretariat, Accounting, Legal Services, Human Resources, Librarian, and Logistics.

8. Short Term CERN Internships for Disabled Students
If you are a technical or scientific field student with some disabilities, looking for an internship to apply your knowledge and get practical experience. Join this collaborative, knowledge-sharing, and international environment of CERN for a period of up to 6 months.
Qualification Requirements
- You are a full-time student (post-secondary) and at least 18 years old.
